Justice for Trayvon

Where were you when you learned about the shocking death of 17-year-old Travyon Martin in Sanford, Florida?

It all started on a warm afternoon on Sunday, February 26, when a neighborhood watch captain by the name of George Zimmerman, 28, chased the unarmed young man who he suspected of carrying drugs. It turned out the Martin, who is black, was carrying nothing but a pack of Skittles and a can of iced tea. Zimmerman called the police before chasing Martin, describing that he looked like he is “up to no good.” Even after the dispatchers advised him not to follow the young man, Zimmerman remained hot on his trail.

Minutes later a woman called 911, telling dispatchers he heard screams of “Help” in the background. Then, a loud gunshot rang out. Martin died instantly. Zimmerman claims self-defense under Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law, which permits anyone who feels threatened. Why wasn’t Zimmerman arrested? This is a perfect example on how corrupt our system is. One: had Zimmerman been a black person, the police would have caught him on the spot. And two: Zimmerman got to walk away with his life, while the teen whom he pursued was not so lucky.

Bottom line is what happened to Travon Martin hits home no matter you race, age, or gender.
