Name That Decade

There are 28 days left in 2009, and we do not have an official name for the soon-to-be-old decade. I’m talking about the ’00s. Many of us bought into the Y2K scare, thinking all our computers will crash and our flights be cancelled. We’d even thought life as we know it would cease to exist.

It all started when Japan was one of the first nations to ring in the year 2000 — it was 8:00 a.m. Friday December 31, 1999 — and nothing happened. NOTHING! Some eighteen months later, an outspoken group gathered to fell the twin towers at the World Trade Center in New York City.

We eventually ended up in Iraq as we could not find the weapons of mass destruction, or WMDs, but we captured and executed Saddam Hussein. The decade is rounded out by bank bailouts, auto bailouts, a lack of health insurance reform, and scores of layoffs, job cuts, and furlough days.

So what shall we call the ’00s?
